Scale, Abstraction and Texture
DXB202 | Week 7
#oneperday18
This week's task was to photograph different objects to experiment with scale and texture. I enjoyed taking these pictures, but found it harder than first expected to abstract the scale of objects. I definitely need to practice these techniques for future photography!
Large to Small
Ground Scraper

Technique: This image was taken on a Cannon DSLR camera. The ISO was set to 200 to create a crisp image. Also, the aperture was set high so that both the foreground and background was in focus.

Process: The picture was taken in the afternoon light, at about 4:30pm. The camera was angled close to the rock, facing upwards.

Reflection: I think this is a really interesting image! I took this image to make the tall building look the same height as the small rock. When I looked at it again though, I realised it actually works both ways - The building looks smaller than usual and the rock looks larger than usual. To improve this image, I should have made the rock look a bit smaller. I got quite confused about what angles to use so more practise/experience would have help!
Small to Large
Tiny Flower

Technique: This image was taken on a Cannon DSLR camera. The ISO was set to 200 to create a crisp image. Also, the aperture was set lower than usual so that the background was blurred.

Process: The picture was taken in the afternoon light, at about 4:30pm. To get this angle, I had to lie on the ground and angle the camera on its side.

Reflection: This is my favourite image from the week! I love how the little tiny flower suddenly looks tall with this angle. It dominated the image and creates a focus point. Also, the colours and details are crisp, creating an intriguing image.
Texture From Nature
Cactus

Technique: This image was taken on my smartphone using the expert settings.

Process: The picture was taken in the afternoon light, at about 5pm. I set the ISO to 200 and increased the noise so that the image had a grainy look.

Reflection: I like how this image turned out, however, it could do with some improvements. Since it was taken on a smart phone, it turned out blurry compared to the other images. Also, the colour looks quite dull. However, I like how you can see the smoothness of the leaves and the pattern of the succulent.
Texture From Man Made Material
Basket

Technique: This image was taken on my smartphone using the expert settings.

Process: The picture was taken in the afternoon light, at about 5pm. I set the ISO to 100 so that the image was crisp.

Reflection: I really like how this image turned out! This is the texture of one of my pots from IKEA. It is made from a man-made, straw-looking material with coloured cord wrapped around. I love the colour gradient in the image, and how you can slightly see the curve of the pot. Overall, this image is satisfying and intriguing since you can't tell what it is at first glance.
Light Painting
Night Traffic

Technique: Cannon DSLR camera using a slow shutter speed - 60 seconds.

Process: The picture was taken next to a busy road at night. The camera was set up onto a tripod and the shutter speed was set to 60 seconds.

Reflection: I love how this image turned out! It was a bit difficult to start with - I had to test out different shutter speeds and camera angles until I achieved this shot. I think it's interesting how you can see the cars drive slower down the hill (light lines are more wobbly) and then they speed up down the bottom (light lines are straight and smooth). I think this image captured the car lights effectively, however, I could have improved by setting up the camera so that the light post was not interrupting the light line.
